What would you have told your 13 year old self? When I was a kid, I often felt awkward and out of place. I felt isolated from other kids because I was different. I preferred to read and write instead of “play kitchen” with the girls. I liked to wear sweatpants and baseball hats and didn’t care for makeup. I didn’t understand my enjoying writing and storytelling was an incredibly valuable form of self-expression and self-love. I didn’t understand I could think bigger about gender and there were ways to love and live into my masculinity. This poem is the message I would have told myself before I knew who I was and how powerful my life could become. What message would you say to yourself at 13?
